Penelope is like most teenagers, she wants to fit in, have friends, be "normal".
But Penelope is far from normal. Animals talk to her, trees protect her, and even her toys give her advice (or boss her around). In a world where magic doesn't exist, there is no place for Penelope. With only one friend, who may or not be an actual friend, and a mom who tolerates, but doesn't believe, all the strange tales that her daughter tells, Penelope has only had her father to find comfort in. He is the only one who truly believes her. He is the only one who truly accepts her, even the parts of her that aren't "normal".
Now he is gone and Penelope is left with nothing but questions. Why did he leave? Was it because of her? Will he ever come back? And how is she supposed to go on now that the only person who made her feel truly "normal" is gone?
To find her father, Penelope will have to travel to mysterious places that exist right beneath your nose, face unearthly dangers, and learn that there is much more at stake than a missing dad and a girl who doesn't fit in.
Plus there is a really good bit with cats, and I know you like those.
