Il y a 35 ans, le 10 décembre 1967, disparaissait Otis Redding. Agé tout juste de 26 ans, ce jeune chanteur noir du Sud des Etats-Unis venait de conquérir l'Europe et était en passe de s'imposer définitivement comme le Roi incontesté de la soul music en Amérique. Incomparable showman à la voix unique, sa carrière fut fulgurante. Il laisse derrière lui une poignée d'albums d'anthologie et quelques chansons inoubliables au nombre desquelles les magnifiques ballades I've Been Loving You Too Long ou Try a Little Tenderness et surtout l'atemporel (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay, son chef-d'œuvre testamentaire.

A travers cette petite biographie - la première en français consacrée à Otis Redding - c'est aussi tout un pan de la fabuleuse histoire de la soul music et du mythique label Stax que cet ouvrage retrace.
