Ce livre étudie l'enracinement de l'imperium au Palatin. Dans le processus de transformation de la colline aristocratique en palais, la période de Tibère à Vespasien est déterminante. Héritée d'Auguste, la dynamique princière favorise un agrandissement de la propriété impériale sur le Palatin, par accumulation de domus jusqu'à recouvrir l'ensemble de la colline sous Claude ou Néron. Vespasien met un terme à la logique d'extension de la demeure impériale, qui a culminé avec Néron, en recentrant l'espace du pouvoir sur le Palatin, sur lequel Domitien construit son palais.

Les études réunies analysent la construction de la résidence impériale, son fonctionnement et ses représentations. Elles soulignent le renouvellement de nos connaissances et de nos interprétations sur la question de l'émergence de la colline du pouvoir à Rome.

This book examines how the imperium settled on the Palatine. The period between Tiberius and Vespasian is decisive in the process during which the aristocratic hill turns into a palace. Initiated by Augustus, the dynamic impulsed by the emperors favours the accumulation of domus until the imperial properties completely cover the hill by the reign of Claudius or Nero. Vespasian puts an end to the extension of the imperial residence and refocuses the power on the Palatine space. Afterwards, Domitian builds his palace on this hill.

The studies which are collected in this book analyze how the imperial residence was constructed, worked and was represented. They illustrate which are the new discoveries and interpretations concerning the emergence of the Roman hill of power.
