Élevé sur un podium, le Narbo Via donne une impression de monumentalité civique et architecturale tout en retenue, à l'entrée de la ville de Narbonne. Conçus par les architectes de l'agence Foster + Partners, ses grands volumes nobles et sa disposition axiale rappellent les archétypes romains et reflètent la nature brute de ses objets anciens - une remarquable collection d'objets qui étaient autrefois répartis entre trois musées et des installations de stockage.

Relier entre elles des collections éclectiques et faire parler ces objets au sein d'un écrin architectural, voilà le défi relevé par l'équipe constituée de l'agence britannique Foster + Partners, associée à l'agence nîmoise Capia et au Studio Adrien Gardère basé à Paris. Cette équipe, d'envergure internationale, a réalisé un édifice dont le design s'inspire de la collection archéologique tout comme du paysage historique au sein duquel il s'insère.

Le projet architectural se plie aux exigences de conservation et de présentation des collections archéologiques. La pièce maîtresse de la muséographie, le mur lapidaire, une mosaïque interactive de pierre et de lumière, composée de fragments de bas-reliefs en pierre issus d'anciens monuments funéraires, prend place dans un volume majestueux au coeur de l'édifice.

Raised on podium, Narbo Via provides a sense of restrained civic and architectural monumentality at the entrance to the City of Narbonne. Designed by the architects Foster + Partners, its large, noble volumes and axial arrangement are reminiscent of Roman archetypes and reflect the raw nature of its ancient exhibits - a remarkable collection of objects that were formerly split up between three museums and storage facilities.

The challenge facing Foster + Partners, Capia and Studio Adrien Gardère - the team based in London, Nîmes and Paris respectively - was to interconnect these eclectic collections, which will change and grow over time, within a simple yet flexible architectural language, one imbued with a sense of accessibility and connection to his- tory and culture - essential for this museum of 'living' antiquity. This world-class team has produced a building whose design draws its inspiration from the archaeological collection and from the historic landscape that surrounds it.

The architectural project meets all the conservation and presentation requirements for archaeological collections. The centrepiece of the museum is the Lapidary Wall, an interactive mosaic of stone and light that displays a unique collection of ancient stone relief funerary blocks and stands in a majestic space at the public heart of the building.
