Très jeune, Munch (1863-1944), fils d'un médecin militaire norvégien, perd sa mère et sa soeur. Ces deux morts marquent à vie l'art de Munch; dans toutes ses peintures, elle n'est jamais loin et fait partie de ses thèmes de prédilection, avec l'amour et la douleur. Il se retrouve dans la philosophie nihiliste de Nietszche et pessimiste de Schopenauer.

Plus tard, l'angoisse, la jalousie, la haine que l'on retrouve dans ses tableaux prennent une portée universelle et ne renvoient plus qu'à sa seule souffrance, mais à celle de l'humanité toute entière. La Frise de la Vie, présentée au public en 1902 et composée de La Voix, Cendres, Le Cri et Anxiété, est l'une de ses oeuvres majeures, synthèse de ses hantises.

Il est considéré, pour son univers si particulier et les thèmes qu'il aborde, comme le pionnier de l'expressionnisme, courant qui prend forme dans l'Allemagne des années 30.

At a very young age, Munch (1863-1944), son of a Norwegian military doctor, lost his mother and sister. These two deaths marked Munch's art for life; in all his paintings, it is never far away and is one of his favorite themes, along with love and pain. He finds himself in the nihilistic philosophy of Nietszche and the pessimistic philosophy of Schopenauer.

Later, the anguish, jealousy, and hatred found in his paintings take on a universal scope and no longer refer only to his own suffering, but to that of all humanity. The Frieze of Life, presented to the public in 1902 and composed of The Voice, Ashes, The Scream and Anxiety, is one of his major works, a synthesis of his haunts.

He is considered, for his so particular universe and the topics which he approaches, as the pioneer of the expressionism, current which takes shape in Germany of the 30s.
