Ce répertoire, constitué par l'édition d'un manuscrit de la bibliothèque des vicomtes de Jonghe d'Ardoye conservé en mains privées, enrichi de diverses sources imprimées et monumentales, recense près de 32 550 mots, cris et devises d'individus, familles ou institutions de l'Europe occidentale médiévale et moderne. Mots emblématiques ou devises héraldiques, ces phrases personnelles ou familiales véhiculent les aspirations religieuses, sentimentales ou guerrières de leurs contemporains et tentent de transmettre à la postérité un reflet de leurs mentalités et de leurs goûts. Cet outil de recherche, classé alphabétiquement et suivi d'un volumineux index, rendra de nombreux services aux historiens, historiens de l'art, chercheurs, étudiants et curieux.

This compendium was compiled based on a manuscript from the library of the Viscounts of Jonghe d'Ardoye, presently conserved in a private collection. This vast compilation has been enriched by various manuscript, printed and archaeological
sources and records more than 32,550 mottoes, war-cries and other family or institutional mottoes of Occidental Europe from mediaeval to modem times. Whether emblematic slogans or heraldic devices, these individual or family mottoes express
the bearer's religious, sentimental or bellicose aspirations and they endeavor to pass on the representation of their states of mind and tastes to posterity. This alphabetized research tool is followed by an extensive index that will serve scholars, art historians, researchers and students, as well as the intellectually curious, in numerous ways.

Dieses Repertorium ging aus der Edition einer Handschrift der Bibliothek der Vicomtes de Jonghe d'Ardoye, die sich in Privatbesitz befindet, hervor und schöpft zudem aus einer Reihe weiterer gedruckter wie auch epigraphischer Quellen. Es verzeichnet fast 32,550 Worte, Schlachtrufe und Devisen einzelner Personen, Familien oder Institutionen Westeuropas in Mittelalter und Moderne. Wahlsprüche oder heraldische Devisen, bezogen auf eine Person oder eine Familie, sind religiös, sentimental oder kriegerisch konnotiert ; sie sollen der Nachwelt einen Einblick in ihre Mentalität und ihren Stil vermitteln. Dieses Hilfsmittel der Forschung, das alphabetisch geordnet und durch ein umfangreiches Register erschlossen ist, wird Historikern, Kunsthistorikern, Forschern, Studenten und Neugierigen zahlreiche Dienste leisten.
