Omschrijving

Monsters, Cryptids, and Mysterious Wild Beasts

By Jannette Quackenbush

Discover the stories behind Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland's most incredible creatures-the monsters and mysterious wild beasts that haunt the Appalachian woods and beyond.
Ohio Monsters. West Virginia Monsters. And more!

In this spine-tingling field companion, folklorist and author Jannette Quackenbush brings together the legends, eyewitness reports, and folklore of creatures that blur the line between myth and nature: Bigfoot, Goatman, Frogmen, Black Dogs, Sheepsquatch, Mothman, Flatwoods Monster, Dogman, and many more.

Learn about terrifying encounters and strange phenomena drawn from historical records, newspaper accounts, and firsthand stories passed down through generations.

Inside you'll find tales and locations such as:

  • Snarly Yow, the Black Dog of South Mountain

  • Goatman of Fletchertown Road

  • Sykesville Monster

  • West Virginia Hellhound and Tommyknocker

  • Sheepsquatch and Wampus Cat

  • Vegetable Man

  • Ohio's Bigfoot and Minerva Monster

  • Loveland Frogman

  • Storm Hag of Presque Isle

  • Goat-Man of Pope Lick Trestle (Kentucky)

  • Melon Heads, Flatwoods Monster, Mothman, Appalachian Chupacabra

  • And more regional monsters from the Appalachian wilds

Each story includes the folklore, sightings, and GPS locations where readers can visit the areas themselves and explore the terrain where these creatures were seen.

About the Author
As founder of the 21 Crows American Folklore Archives, Jannette Quackenbush has become one of the leading researchers of Appalachian and Midwestern hauntings and the study of cryptids and unknown animals in North America. Her investigations include work on creatures such as Bigfoot, the Grassman, Mothman, Bessie of Lake Erie, and the Loveland Frogman, connecting eyewitness reports with folklore and geography.

In addition to her writing and archival research, Quackenbush has led public hikes and field explorations focused on ghost and cryptid legends-most notably her Moonville Night Hikes and Hiking Expeditions (Where the Natural World and the Supernatural World Collide(c)), which guide visitors through real haunted and creature-sighting locations. Through these programs, she shares historical context, eyewitness accounts, and folkloric origins while encouraging participants to explore Ohio's haunted landscapes and Appalachian backwoods legends for themselves.

Perfect for readers who love:

  • Cryptozoology & mysterious creatures

  • Appalachian folklore & American legends

  • Ghost stories, strange beasts & haunted landscapes

  • Real-life accounts of unexplained phenomena
