She has combined the awe-inspiring magic of the Harry Potter world with the dazzling beauty of the physical landscapes of The Lord of the Rings, delighting fans of the genre with exciting imagery and an irresistible world. The characterization is stellar, and I was particularly intrigued by Mila, exploring her inner world and her bond with Astra. The impeccable worldbuilding plunges you into a world of magic and mystery. At the same time, the skillfully crafted premonitions create the suspense that keeps you turning the pages. I greatly enjoyed Mila, from the exquisite writing to the fully drawn characters and plot-propelling conflict, and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Sheehan does a great job with dialogue and close, personal narration to let us into Mila's struggles so that we sympathize with her plight, but there's also a lot of love, laughter, and joy. It's refreshing to read a fantasy that is so full of happy moments despite the magic and danger occurring, and fans of unicorn lore and epic fantasy will find Mila utterly enchanting. Some quite powerful themes build subtly and come through very strongly at the end: at its heart, there is a thoughtful and lyrical story about loyalty, legacy, and the cost of truth in a magical world. Overall, I would certainly recommend Mila to fans of brilliantly penned fantasy fiction.
