Henri de Lubac se livre dans « Méditation sur l'Église » avec une âme immensément élargie par ses études historiques et théologiques. Il s'agit d'un livre de méditation, non d'étude, d'un livre d'amour plus que de raison. En lui se dévoile aussitôt le centre dans sa pureté, là où la raison se tourmente encore longtemps sur le pourtour. L'amour comprend, dans toute sa puissance de tension, le paradoxe de l'Église insoluble pour la raison. Le livre entier insiste sur cette tension, jusqu'à en tirer toutes les conséquences existentielles, entre Église d'en haut et d'en bas, Église sanctifiante et sanctifiée, Église toute pure et de pécheurs, Église dans l'éternité et au milieu du monde. Bien avant Vatican II, Henri de Lubac savait que les faiblesses, les cruautés et les méfaits ne restent pas étrangers aux membres, aux autorités et aux institutions de l'Église. La « Méditation », alors proposée et aujourd'hui plus actuelle encore, trace un chemin de lumière dans cette obscurité, conduit au Coeur de l'Église, figurée dans la Vierge Marie, l'Épouse parfaite du Verbe de Dieu.
Méditation sur l'Eglise' was written between 1945 and 1950. Father de Lubac does not bring us a scientific treatise on what the Church is, but a real meditation on the ecclesial mystery. The text was elaborated after discussions with other priests during study days or sacerdotal months. For him, the challenge was to improve the morale of a young clergy shocked by WW2, and to reveal to them the grandeur and the permanence of a Church that cannot escape History or life, on the contrary: it is situated in earthly reality among men's conflicts and obscurity. The book, which comprises nine chapters, was first published by Editions Montaigne. A revised and enriched edition was published in 1985 by DDB. We have taken the 1985 edition, adding three texts by Father de Lubac: 'La Vièrge-Mère'(1961) 'Marie de l'Incarnation et la Sainte Vièrge'(1954) and 'L'Esprit de Sainte Angèle' (1958).
