Omschrijving

Louis Agassiz: His Life and Correspondence is a biography of the famous Swiss-American naturalist, Louis Agassiz, written by Agassiz himself. The book covers Agassiz's life from his childhood in Switzerland to his emigration to the United States, where he became a well-known scientist and educator. The book also includes a collection of Agassiz's letters to his family and colleagues, which offer insights into his personal and professional life. Throughout the book, Agassiz discusses his scientific discoveries and theories, including his work on glaciers and his belief in the unity of species. The biography also touches on Agassiz's views on race and his controversial stance on slavery. Overall, Louis Agassiz: His Life and Correspondence provides a comprehensive look at the life and work of one of the most influential naturalists of the 19th century.. . .I have also a piece of good news to communicate, which will, I hope, lead to very favorable results for me. I think I told you when I left for Paris that my chief anxiety was lest I might not be allowed to examine, and still less to describe, the fossil fishes and their skeletons in the Museum. Knowing that Cuvier intended to write a work on this subject, I supposed that he would reserve these specimens for himself. I half thought he might, on seeing my work so far advanced, propose to me to finish it jointly with him, --but even this I hardly dared to hope. It was on this account, with the view of increasing my materials and having thereby a better chance of success with M. Cuvier, that I desired so earnestly to stop at Strasbourg and Carlsruhe, where I knew specimens were to be seen which would have a direct bearing on my aim. The result has far surpassed my expectation. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
