Al mostrarnos por qué actuamos de determinada manera llegado el momento de comer, Visser despliega la historia de la relación que hemos mantenido con nuestras necesidades más perentorias y con nuestros símbolos más poderosos, pues la mesa es el espacio donde expresamos, además de nuestro lugar en la sociedad, nuestras intenciones más íntimas.

This work explores that revealing, vibrant, and complex moment when we gather o eat, offering the reader examples of ranging from the ancient Greeks to modern yuppies, from cannibals to the faithful at the Eucharist from formal dinners to picnics. When we eat together, we eat together, we bring our cultures with us, along with all the potential pleasures and dangers it brings. Throughout history, tale manners served as a form of restraint, a way to tame the more primitive aspects of human behavior (especially in men). By showing us why we act the way we do at mealtimes, Visser unfolds the history of our relationship with our most basic needs and our most powerful symbols. The tables, after all, is the space where we express not only our place in society but also or most intimate intentions.
