Los estudiosos del cristianismo primitivo han recurrido a los textos antiguos como fuente de sus investigaciones, pero rara vez han prestado atención a los manuscritos donde se han conservado. Y sin embargo, estos manuscritos, debido a sus características físicas y a los rasgos paleográficos de su escritura, son de capital importancia, ya que constituyen los primeros testimonios de la «cultura material» del cristianismo y arrojan nueva luz sobre los orígenes del movimiento cristiano. Tras reseñar los textos copiados por los seguidores de Jesús en los más antiguos manuscritos, Hurtado destaca la opción de los cristianos por el códice en detrimento del rollo, que era el formato preferido por la cultura de la época para la transmisión de textos. El autor dedica también espacio al estudio de los nomina sacra y de los estaurogramas, porque ambos representan ya una prueba de la devoción a Cristo y a su pasión.
