Nemesio Guilló no viajó de Cuba a Estados Unidos a los once años solo para encontrar un nuevo deporte e introducirlo en su país natal. ¡Pero eso es exactamente lo que sucedió!

Nemesio y su hermano mayor llegaron a Alabama en 1858 para asistir a la escuela. Mientras estaban allí, conocieron un nuevo deporte que estaba arrasando en todo el país: el béisbol. En Cuba, los colonizadores españoles querían que los cubanos siguieran las costumbres españolas, incluidas las corridas de toros. Nemesio creía que el béisbol reflejaba mejor el espíritu de los cubanos y cuando regresó a casa, llevó con él un bate de béisbol para enseñarle a jugar a sus amigos. El gobernador español acabó prohibiendo el béisbol en Cuba, pero para entonces ya se había popularizado. ¡Con el tiempo, los cubanos obtuvieron su independencia y el béisbol se convirtió en el deporte nacional!

Nemesio and his older brother came to Alabama in 1858 to attend school. While there, they encountered a new sport that was sweeping the country--baseball. Back in Cuba, Spanish colonizers expected Cubans to follow Spanish customs, including bullfighting. Nemesio believed that baseball better reflected the spirit of the Cuban people, and when he returned home, he brought along a baseball bat so he could introduce the game to his friends. The Spanish governor eventually banned béisbol, as it became known, from being played in Cuba, but by that point it had already caught on. In time, the Cubans gained their independence, and baseball became the national sport!
