In the 18th century, Liverpool's position as a favored port for Britain's growing Atlantic trade to the West Indies and America allowed it to expand rapidly. It soon became one of the largest and richest cities in the country and the architecture legacy of the wealth in the city can still be seen in Liverpool today.
