En 1973, disparaissait Jacques Maritain, l'un des penseurs catholiques les plus importants du XXe siècle. Philosophe de la démocratie entre autres, il a contribué à éloigner les catholiques de la tentation du régime autoritaire, et a combattu avec énergie l'antisémitisme. Il a également participé à l'élaboration de la Déclaration universelle des droits de l'homme. Intellectuel engagé dans la Cité, il a beaucoup travaillé sur l'art, l'éducation, la métaphysique, donnant un nouvel élan à la pensée de saint Thomas d'Aquin. Sa philosophie a inspiré les activités de l'institution qui porte son nom. L'Institut international Jacques Maritain est l'expression d'une société civile engagée dans la promotion des valeurs démocratiques, qui réfléchit sur le monde d'aujourd'hui. En cela, il ne cesse de montrer l'actualité et la vivacité de la pensée de Maritain. Ce livre retrace l'histoire et montre toute l'originalité de l'Institut et de ses finalités sociales, fondamentales en notre temps menacé par la tentation de la peur de l'Autre, par toutes les formes de populisme et de repli sur soi. « C'est bien à l'activité multiforme et mondiale de l'Institut que le nom de Maritain doit d'être aujourd'hui connu dans de nombreux pays, moins pour sa haute philosophie que pour son intelligence du monde contemporain et de ses problèmes fondamentaux » (Emile Poulat).

1973 witnessed the death of Jacques Maritain, one of the most important Catholic thinkers of the 20th century. This thinker of democracy - amongst other things - helped to distance Catholics from the temptation of authoritarian regimes and virulently combatted anti-Semitism. He also contributed greatly to the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As a committed intellectual in the life of the City, he worked extensively on art, education and metaphysics, lending new impetus to the thinking of St. Thomas Aquinas. It is his philosophy that inspired the activities of the institution that today bears his name. The International Jacques Maritain Institute is the expression of a civil society committed to promoting democratic values, and which reflects on today's world. In so doing, it constantly demonstrates the topicality and intensity of Maritain's thinking.
