Emmanuelle Danblon part à la recherche d'une vision de la raison humaine portée par la rhétorique des origines : une technique conçue pour que chaque citoyen puisse faire usage de la parole publique une technique conçue pour un homme rhétorique rationnel parce qu'il est émotionnel, sensible, confiant dans ses intuitions et capable de les confronter à celles d'Autrui. Les principales fonctions de la rhétorique sont passées en revue tant dans leur manifestation spontanée, et sans doute universelle, que dans leurs usages plus techniques, mis au service des institutions de la société. Enfin, le modèle de la rhétorique classique, tel qu'il fut pensé pour une société engagée dans la grande aventure de l'ouverture à l'Autre, est transféré dans la société contemporaine, dans laquelle l'ouverture est devenue synonyme d'universalité mais aussi, tragiquement, de désenchantement. L'auteur montre en quoi le modèle rhétorique et sa pratique devraient constituer un outil précieux pour lever ce nouveau défi : acquérir une confiance en soi dans un monde où l'incertitude est loi, dans un monde où plus personne ne peut nous abandonner sinon nous-mêmes.

Emmanuelle Danblon is in search of a vision of human reason based on the origins of rhetoric: a technique invented so that each citizen would be able to speak in public a technique designed for a reasoning, oratorical man because he is emotional, sensitive, has faith in his intuitions and is capable of comparing them with those of Others. The principal functions of rhetoric are reviewed as much in their spontaneous expression, which is undoubtedly universal, as in their more technical applications in the service of institutions in society. Lastly, the model of classic rhetoric, as it was conceived for use in a society committed to the great adventure of opening up to the Other, is transferred into contemporary society, in which opening has become synonymous with universality but also, and tragically, with disillusion. The author shows how the rhetoric model and its practice ought to be a precious tool to face a new challenge: to gain self confidence in a world where uncertainty is the rule, in a world where no one can abandon us, except ourselves.
