La collection Recherches sur les Rhétoriques
Religieuses (RRR) a pour objet le langage
dans ses rapports avec le divin, les formes
de communication avec les dieux, les
différentes manières de dire la conscience et
le sentiment religieux. Elle entend fournir
des instruments et ouvrir des voies nouvelles
pour une meilleure compréhension de la
rhétorique et de la religion.

Le présent ouvrage

La philologie moderne a redécouvert
AElius Aristide, orateur et écrivain du II^e
siècle après J.-C., après plusieurs siècles
d'oubli. Mais au sein même du corpus
aristidien les discours 30-34 ont été peu
commentés et rarement pris en compte.

Ces textes, entièrement revus et traduits
pour la première fois en français - avec
une édition critique du discours 31 -, se
révèlent d'une importance scientifique primordiale
dans les domaines les plus
contemporains de la recherche sur l'Antiquité
grecque. Ils permettent de mieux
connaître l'univers des sophistes des premiers
siècles de notre ère, la transmission
du savoir, et plus spécifiquement de la rhétorique,
devenue l'enseignement principal
des élites, l'héritage culturel de la Grèce
classique au II^e s. après J.-C., la place occupée
par les savants que sont les grammairiens,
et bien entendu, quand on évoque
AElius Aristide, la force de la foi et du dieu,
en particulier Asclépios, présent dans toutes
les activités humaines.

Ainsi, le présent ouvrage, au croisement de
la rhétorique et de la religion, contribue à
éclairer l'histoire de l'enseignement antique
et le devenir de la civilisation grecque au
cours des premiers siècles de notre ère.

The series

The series Research on the Rhetorics of
Religion (RRR) studies language in its
relationship to the holy, the means of
communicating with the gods, the different
ways of expressing one's awareness of the
divine and the feelings which it elicits. Its
goal is to provide instruments of analysis and
to open avenues of research which will allow
a better grasp of rhetoric and religion.

The present book

After having forgotten Aelius Aristides for
many centuries, modern philology has
rediscovered this orator and writer of the
2nd century A.D. But in the Aristidian
corpus, there have been few commentaries
on orations 30 through 34, and they have
rarely been considered. These texts,
reviewed and translated in their entirety for
the first time into French, with a critical
edition of oration 31, have turned out to
be of the utmost scientific importance in
contemporary Greek antiquity research.

Thanks to them, we are able to better
know the universe of the sophists in the
first centuries of our era, the handing down
of knowledge, and more specifically of
rhetoric, which had become the main
education of the elites, the cultural heritage
of Classic Greece in the 2nd century A.D.,
the part played by the scholars - the
grammarians - and of course, when we
mention Aelius Aristides, the power of
faith and of god, especially Asclepius,
present in all human activities.

Hence the present work, at the crossroads
of rhetoric and religion, contributes to
shed light on the history of ancient teaching
and the future of the Greek civilization
during the first centuries in our era.
