Le mythe d'Europe, dont les premières attestations remontent au VIII^e siècle av. J.-C., dans les Poèmes Homériques et la Théogonie d'Hésiode, façonne de nouvelles visions, figures et images dans les productions littéraires européennes tout comme dans les milieux artistiques, de l'Antiquité gréco-romaine à nos jours. Il s'agit d'un voyage énigmatique dont il est impossible de déterminer les véritables prémices et dont la fin est probablement encore lointaine. Le centre d'attention du présent volume est Europe, princesse phénicienne, et non l'Europe, idée géopolitique. Avec un regard multidisciplinaire et diachronique, cet ouvrage explore différentes facettes de la réception du mythe. Les contributeurs proposent des réflexions autour de la caractérisation du personnage mythique d'Europe, pour les périodes archaïque et classique, et autour de la réélaboration du mythe à l'époque hellénistique et humaniste. L'enquête s'étend jusqu'à l'étude de la persistance du mythe d'Europe dans l'art et dans la littérature des époques moderne et contemporaine.

The present book

The myth of Europa, first attested in the eighth century BCE in Homeric Poems and Hesiod's Theogony, shapes new visions, figures and images in European literary productions as well as in artistic circles from Graeco-Roman antiquity to the present day. It is an enigmatic journey whose true beginnings cannot be determined and whose end is probably still far off. The centre of attention in this volume is Europa, Phoenician princess, and not Europe, geopolitical idea. With a multidisciplinary and diachronic view, this book explores different facets of the reception of the myth. The contributors offer reflections on the characterization of the mythical figure of Europa, for the archaic and classical periods, and on the reworking of the myth in the Hellenistic and humanistic period. The investigation extends to the study of the persistence of the myth of Europa in the art and literature of modern and contemporary times.
