Déporté à seize ans, Josef Lewkowicz a miraculeusement survécu à six camps de concentration, dont Plaszow, où il travaille dans l'usine d'Oskar Schindler, Auschwitz-Birkenau et Mauthausen.

À la Libération, brisé par le massacre de sa famille, sans foyer ni perspectives, Josef décide de consacrer sa vie à la justice et aide l'armée américaine à traquer les commandants SS en fuite. Alors qu'il est devenu chasseur de nazis, l'une de ses principales cibles est Amon Göth, le sinistre « boucher d'Hitler », qu'il a côtoyé et vu à l'oeuvre.

Mêlant son récit à la grande histoire, Josef Lewkowicz nous raconte les camps de l'intérieur, leur hiérarchie et leur évolution, et nous livre les Mémoires d'un homme au destin exceptionnel, qui a voué son existence à combattre le mal.
