Depuis la création du Yellowstone en 1872, le parc naturel apparaît comme un objet ambigu, à la fois virginal et cadastré, ouvert et clôturé, dont le paradoxe topologique n'a jamais cessé de troubler les écrivains. Fort de ce constat, cet essai interroge, de façon théorique et analytique, l'obstruction spécifique que causent les parcs naturels à nombre d'écritures de la nature, en l'occurrence de l'Ouest américain. Comment traduire une expérience de la nature malgré cette interface tierce ? Quelles stratégies les écrivains mobilisent-ils pour la contourner, l'affronter ? À ces questions, on voudra donner des réponses variées et complémentaires en puisant dans un corpus contemporain de récits de voyage français et de nature writing américains.

Since the creation of Yellowstone National Park in 1872, natural parks appear as highly ambiguous lands, at the same time virginal and registered, open and fenced, whose topological paradox keeps upsetting or obsessing many writers. This essay considers the influence of natural parks on some representative writings featuring the American West. How do writers describe their experience of wilderness despite this third mediator? We would like to give some varied and complementary answers to this question, drawing on a contemporary corpus of French travel writing and American nature writing.
