L'impact des arts extra-européens sur la modernité photographique de 1918 à nos jours

Les arts dits « primitifs » ont eu, on le sait, un impact majeur sur la peinture et la sculpture du XX^e siècle. Qu'en est-il pour la photographie ? S'appuyant sur une vaste iconographie, Valentine Plisnier montre que, depuis les avant-gardes jusqu'à aujourd'hui, et sur tous les continents, les artistes photographes y ont puisé de multiples sources d'inspiration. Les objets primitifs servent non seulement à renouveler le vocabulaire plastique des dadaïstes et des surréalistes - Man Ray, Hannah Höch, Erwin Blumenfeld... -, ils sont également réinvestis d'un sens nouveau par des artistes en quête de leurs origines, de leur identité ou de repères pour une humanité qui se cherche après les tragédies et les mutations politiques et sociales du siècle dernier - Alfred Stieglitz, Romare Bearden, Orlan, Rotimi Fani-Kayode et Alex Hirst...

D'autres photographes - tels Brassaï et, plus près de nous, Hughes Dubois, Nicolas Bruant ou Frédéric Vidal, entre autres -, marqués par la puissance visuelle née de la matérialité des objets, ont exploré les possibilités de la matière photographique jusqu'à sacrifier les normes de la représentation, voire l'image de l'objet lui-même. Valentine Plisnier met ainsi au jour l'importance historique des arts extra-européens dans la photographie, mais aussi leur présence, toujours prégnante, dans l'imaginaire des artistes.

Non-Western Art and Modern Photography : From 1918 to the Present

It is no secret that « primitive » art had a major impact on Western painting and sculpture in the 20^th century. But what were its repercussions for photography ? In this book Valentine Plisnier draws on a vast range of images to demonstrate that from the avant-gardes through the present day, and all over the world, artist-photographers have found primitive objects an endlessly rich source of inspiration. Not only did these artifacts revivify the visual vocabulary of Dadaists and Surrealists like Man Ray, Hannah Höch, and Erwin Blumenfeld ; they were themselves endowed with new significance by Alfred Stieglitz, Romare Bearden, Orlan, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Alex Hirst and other artists engaged in a search for their roots, their identity, or new bearings for a world shaken by the tragedies and political and social upheavals of their times. Marked by the sheer material/ visual impact of primitive art, other photographers- Brassaï, and more recently Hughes Dubois, Nicolas Bruant and Frédéric Vidal, for example -have pushed photographic possibility to its limits, sometimes sacrificing the rules of representation and even the image of the object in question. Here Valentine Plisnier highlights both the historical role of non-European art in photography, and its pervasive presence in the artistic imagination.
