Ce deuxième volume des écrits de Jean-Claude Risset (après le premier volume, Composer le son. Repères d'une exploration du monde sonore numérique, publié en 2014 dans la même collection) approfondit la présentation d'un univers musical novateur, fondé sur une nouvelle lutherie et une « nouvelle acoustique », résultant d'une meilleure connaissance physique du phénomène musical.
Le numérique change la manière de composer. L'analyse et la synthèse numériques du son exercent un impact sur la perception musicale : les illusions auditives et la psycho-acoustique nourrissent également le travail du créateur, qui dispose de nouveaux outils (contrôle en temps réel, contrôle gestuel, le catalogue des sons synthétisés par l'ordinateur, les sons paradoxaux, etc.). Un grand chapitre est consacré aux textes de J.-C. Risset sur ses propres oeuvres.
