Dans le De Trinitate, Augustin s'attache à « rendre raison » de la foi dans la Trinité telle qu'elle a été définie à Nicée : les trois personnes divines sont d'une même essence et égales entre elles tout en étant distinctes, et leur action indivise dans le monde, en tant qu'elles sont un seul être, ne remet pas en cause la distinction de leurs manifestations lors des théophanies et des « missions » divines. L' oeuvre présente d'abord les fondements scripturaires de la doctrine trinitaire et montre comment le langage des Écritures peut être interprété sans donner prise à la thèse arienne de la subordination du Fils et du Saint Esprit par rapport au Père. Augustin recourt ensuite aux catégories d'Aristote en vue d'expliquer la formule canonique « une essence, trois personnes ». Enfin, une approche analogique, fondée sur l'affirmation selon laquelle l'homme a été créé à l'image de Dieu, cherche des images de la Trinité dans l'esprit humain et ses facultés. Les articles rassemblés dans ce livre explorent le De Trinitate dans ses trois « volets » exégétique, logique et noétique.

In the De Trinitate, Augustine applies himself to "giving an account" of belief in the Trinity as it had been defined at Nicaea : the three divine persons are one essence and equal to each other,while being distinct, and their undivided action in the world as one being does not call into question their distinct manifestations in theophnaies and divine "missions". The work begins by presenting the scriptural basis of trinitarian doctrine and shows how the language of the Scriptures can be interpreted without giving a handle to the Arian thesis of the Son's and Holy Spirit's subordination to the Father. Augustine then has recourse to Aristotle's categories in order to explain the canonical formula "one essence, three persons". Finally, an analogical approach, based on the assertion that humans were created in God's image, looks for images of the Trinity in the human mind and its faculties. The articles collected in this book explore the De Trinitate under its three aspects, exegetic, logical, and noetic.
