Balnéorient est un programme de recherche fédératif et pluridisciplinaire qui se propose d'étudier les bains collectifs (balaneia, thermes et hammams) en Méditerranée orientale et dans la péninsule Arabique de l'Antiquité à nos jours. Dans cette perspective, l'Égypte constitue un terrain de recherche privilégié : les bains y sont « merveilleusement nombreux » sur le terrain et dans les textes.

Le premier colloque Balnéorient, destiné à présenter les résultats des prospections, fouilles ou dépouillements d'archives effectués en Égypte, s'est donc tenu logiquement à Alexandrie, dans les locaux de la Bibliotheca Alexandrina, du I^er au 4 décembre 2006. Il a abordé de manière diachronique la question du bain en Égypte, des installations antiques (pharaoniques, grecques, impériales et byzantines) aux hammams médiévaux et modernes.

Le livre qui en est issu réunit une trentaine d'études de cas et synthèses régionales et historiques ; il propose un glossaire multilingue (grec, latin, arabe) et diachronique, des index (toponymes, sources, termes techniques dans les langues concernées) et une bibliographie commune. Il fait ainsi figure d'introduction au programme Balnéorient.

Balnéorient is a collective and multidisciplinary research program whose aim is to study federative baths (balaneia, thermae and hammams) in the countries of Eastern Mediterranean and Arabian Peninsula from ancient times to nowadays. Egypt is indeed the best field of research : there are many baths all over the country and there are many references to baths in Egyptian literature and documentary texts.

The first Balnéorient conference which presented the results of surveys, excavations and archives studies made in Egypt, was thus logically held in Alexandria, I-4 December 2006, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The question of baths in Egypt was discussed in a diachronical way with lectures dealing with antique buildings (pharaonic, greek, imperial and byzantine) as well as medieval and modern hammams.

In this book thirty case studies, regional and historical syntheses, a diachronic multilingual glossary (Greek, Latin, and Arabic), indexes (place-names, textual sources, and technical terms in different languages) as well as a common bibliography, are to be found. The Alexandria conference proceedings can thus be considered as the introduction of the Balnéorient programme.
