En juillet 1945 Martin Heidegger comparaît devant la commission de dénazification pour y répondre de deux chefs d'accusation : avoir mis l'université de Fribourg, dont il avait été recteur, au service du parti national-socialiste; avoir asservi son enseignement philosophique à un endoctrinement. Il s'agit, pour les autorités françaises d'occupation, de faire un exemple du plus célèbre philosophe européen. Paradoxe : il ne reste de cet épisode crucial, qui reviendra hanter la carrière et la postérité de Heidegger, que l'acte d'accusation et le verdict. La plaidoirie de Heidegger a disparu.

Mais deux philosophes américains, spécialistes de Heidegger, l'ont reconstituée, en renouvelant le geste de Platon qui écrivit la plaidoirie, perdue elle aussi, de Socrate, la fameuse Apologie. Heidegger, comme Socrate, y répond de l'accusation d'avoir corrompu la jeunesse et, comme Socrate, il y réplique par une analyse de la relation enseignante et le péril d'avoir à se justifier devant une autorité politique. Il était temps de faire connaître au public français cet Art d'enseigner du penseur de la Forêt-Noire, qui est à la fois une remarquable introduction à la philosophie de Heidegger et une brillante démonstration de ce qu'une connaissance intime de son œuvre peut produire d'actuel.

At the beginning and at the end of metaphysics, the two greatest philosophers on trial--and, remarkably, on the same charges of impiety and corrupting youth, and by the same accusers, the powers of democracy restored.
The alleged reactionary irrationalism of Heidegger's thought had purportedly led him to make the worse argument appear the stronger. This modern-day Socrates was indicted for the “impiety” of turning the free space of the academy into the platform of National Socialist ideology, and for “corrupting” German youth, by indoctrinating them with Nazi propaganda and inciting them to action. Consider Heidegger in extremis, defending himself on the basis of a view of the meaning of higher education and pedagogy in general as Greek paideia, irreducible to either of the two predominant educational alternatives characteristic of modernity, liberal education and professional training.
