S'il vient chercher ici un discours pieux, ce n'est pas cela que j'ai l'intention de lui offrir. La théologie doit servir à la foi et à la piété, certes, mais à sa façon, qui n'est pas celle d'un discours édifiant. Ce n'est pas en accumulant les hyperboles au sujet de Marie que l'on sert sa cause ou celle de la foi. C'est à juste titre qu'on a pu parler de littérature vide" pour qualifier ces discours sans fondement qui ont fait tant de tort à la vraie doctrine catholique sur Marie. Je ne suis pas le seul ni le premier à réagir sur ce point. Saint Bernard disait déjà : "La Vierge royale n'a nul besoin de faux honneurs." Au siècle suivant, saint Bonaventure disait de façon plus rude : "Marie n'a pas besoin de nos mensonges." J'aimerais faire partager cette attitude à mes lecteurs. À long terme, leur foi et leur dévotion ne pourront qu'y gagner. » (Jean-Pierre Torrell.)
