L'auteur esquisse d'abord l'histoire de l'application lente et très progressive de la psychanalyse freudienne à la schizophrénie. Il identifie ensuite clairement cette maladie en décrivant les caractéristiques par lesquelles elle se manifeste dans l'affectivité, dans la manière de penser et dans les rapports aux autres. Cela le conduit à déterminer la schizophrénie comme une maladie proprement psychologique, quelle que soit la part de cause ou d'effet physiologique observée. Dans son étude, Antoine Vergote s'appuie particulièrement sur ce que, en sa longue thérapie analytique, un patient lui a dit. Sont ainsi groupés dans ce livre : les rapports au langage et à la parole les expériences qui ont entraîné le développement de la schizophrénie les rapports à la vie, au corps, aux autres, à la temporalité, à l'ego, aux affects. La durée de l'analyse, l'absolue liberté de la parole et les progressives interventions de l'analyste ont permis à la personne d'arriver à parler normalement et à rendre personnelles ses relations familiales, amicales et professionnelles. Le lecteur observera que pareille thérapie est proprement psychananalytique mais autrement que dans le cas des névroses. Antoine Vergote présente les principes et l'effet heureux d'une psychanalyse appliquée à un cas de schizophrénie.

First of all, the author summarizes the history of the slow and gradual application of Freudian psychoanalysis to schizophrenia. He then clearly identifies that illness by describing the symptoms through which it becomes manifest in affectivity, in the way of thinking and in relations with others. All of which leads him to define schizophrenia as a specifically psychological illness, whatever role the cause may play, or the physiological effects observed. In this study, Antoine Vergote draws especially on what a patient said to him during a long analytical therapy. The following are grouped in the book: the rapports with language and words experiences that lead to the development of schizophrenia relations to life, the body, others, temporality, the ego, affect. The duration of the analysis, absolute freedom of expression and the analyst's progressive interventions permitted the patient to speak normally and personalize family, friendly and professional relations. The reader will observe that such a therapy is specifically psychoanalytical but not in the same way as in the cases of neurosis.
