Dans les années 1980, Marguerite Harl et ses collaborateurs de la Sorbonne entreprennent une traduction en français de la version grecque de la Bible dite des Septante – une des racines de notre civilisation. Double paradoxe puisque la priorité que l'humaniste Érasme donnait aux sources grecques des Écritures avait été rejetée, à la Renaissance, par les maîtres scolastiques de la Sorbonne d'alors – et la laïcité actuelle de l'Université française ne semblait pas propice à engendrer un tel projet. Et pourtant, ce sont bien des universitaires qui remettent aujourd'hui en honneur les textes grecs de la tradition biblique ! Marguerite Harl, dont la thèse de doctorat portait sur le premier grand théologien du christianisme, Origène, raconte comment, élue professeur de grec à la Sorbonne, elle y rejoint Henri-lrénée Marrou qui renouvelait l'étude de l'histoire ancienne du christianisme et comment, en helléniste, elle inaugure dès les années 1960 un enseignement sur les écrivains grecs chrétiens, absents jusque-là des études classiques. Comment des « Pères de l'Église », elle sera amenée à remonter au philosophe juif Philon d'Alexandrie puis à la Septante elle-même. Mais l'auteur ne fait pas que conter une expérience, elle développe une réflexion de première importance pour les débats sur la transmission de la Bible à travers ses traductions et ses traditions de lecture et sur les relations du judaïsme et du christianisme. Marguerite Harl exprime et justifie ici sa conviction que transmettre et interpréter les textes religieux peuvent se faire dans la neutralité d'une approche laïque, sans que ce soit au détriment de leur juste compréhension.

In the eighties, Marguerite Harl and her colleagues at La Sorbonne began a French translation of the Greek version of the ‘Septuagint' Bible, one of the founding texts of our civilisation. This was a double paradox: firstly, because in Renaissance times, the scholastic masters of that same university rejected the priority given to Greek sources by the humanist Erasmus secondly, because we would hardly expect one of France's secular universities to support such a venture. However, surprising as it may be, our academics have decided to pay homage to the traditional Greek texts of the Bible! Marguerite Harl, who presented a thesis on Origen, the first great Christian theologian, was elected to the post of professor of Greek at La Sorbonne, where she joined Henri-Irénée Marrou, then busy renovating the study of the ancient history of Christianity. By the sixties, she had inaugurated a programme based on the Greek Christian writers, until then absent from the Classics. She tells how she travelled from the ‘Fathers of the Church' all the way back to the Jewish philosopher Philon of Alexandria, then to the Septuagint. But the author does not simply recount her own experience she develops a reflection that is highly relevant to modern debates on the transmission of the Bible through its translations and reading traditions, and on the relations between Judaism and Christianity. In this book, Marguerite Harl expresses and defends her conviction that the transmission and interpretation of religious texts can be achieved within a neutral and secular approach, without losing any depth or precision in understanding.
