Cara Hodges receives a letter from a woman claiming to be her husband's lover. She could have ignored the note, but since it was the third time that he'd cheated, she couldn't let it go. For her it was his third strike. After thinking about this development overnight, Cara decides to walk away from her life in Spokane, Washington and ends up in Laramie, Wyoming. Needing to clear her head and start a new life, she finds an apartment and a job. Her husband reports her missing.

Detective William Benz works at the Laramie Police Department. He's developed some feelings for Cara, when he receives word that her husband has been murdered in Spokane, Washington. He wants to help her through the legalities, but she's been keeping him at arm's length and he doesn't want to be pushy.
