Kandinsky naît à Moscou en 1866. Il y suit des études de droit, avant de tout abandonner pour se consacrer à l'art. Au cours de son apprentissage de la peinture en Allemagne, il rencontre l'artiste Gabriele Münter, qui l'emmène sillonner le monde. Pendant très longtemps, le Russe fait figure d'amateur. Ce n'est qu'en 1908 qu'il débute sa véritable carrière : ses peintures deviennent plus abstraites et il y développe le principe d'autonomie croissante des couleurs. Kandinsky was born in Moscow in 1866. He studied law there, before abandoning everything to devote himself to art. During his apprenticeship in Germany, he met the artist Gabriele Münter, who took him around the world. For a long time, the Russian was an amateur. It was not until 1908 that he began his real career: his paintings became more abstract and he developed the principle of increasing autonomy of colors. A few years later, his artistic ideas were collected in the book Point and Line on a Plan.
