Jessica Stockholder est une artiste américaine née en 1959 à Seattle. Depuis le début des années 1980 elle développe sa recherche à partir de matériaux et d'objets divers qu'elle choisit selon des critères très simples : ils sont directement utilisables, immédiatement disponibles et le moins cher possible. Guidée par les qualités de matières, de formes et de couleurs des objets, Jessica Stockholder parvient à les faire coexister. L'artiste essaie de donner une logique au chaos, à l'imprévu et au désordre à l'intérieur de la composition. Ce dialogue entre des zones qualitativement distinctes donne à ses installations une unité spatiale proche de la peinture. Les objets perdent leurs identités fonctionnelles dans un mouvement qui va du concret à l'abstrait.

Jessica Stockholder is an American artist born in Seattle in 1959. Her work has developed since the early 1980s through the selection of different materials and objects on the basis of very simple criteria. They must be directly usable, readily available and as economical as possible. Guided by the qualities of the materials and the shapes and colours of the objects, Stockholder succeeds in making them coexist. The artist seeks to impose a logic on chaos, unpredictability and disorder inside the composition. This dialogue between qualitatively distinct areas gives her installations a spatial unity that is close to painting. The objects lose their functional identities in transition from the concrete to the abstract.
