Sugarcane is an important cash crop of Pakistan. Per capita consumption of continents and some important countries are given in per capita in kg: Europe (42.3), South America (41.9), North America (35.6), Asia (11.9), Africa (14.3), Oceania (41.4), USA (30.2), USSR (49.0), France (36.4), UK (41.1), West Germany (36.6), Singapore (65.4), Philippines (24.5), Cub (86.2), Mexico (46.4), Brazil (50.2), Saudi Arabia (30.2), Egypt (31.9), India (12.8), Israel (61.6), Japan (22.7), Burma (1.3). Pakistan is ranked 6th in world cane acreage & 15th in sugar production. Sugar cane is grown on over a million hectares and provides the raw material for Pakistan's 84 sugar mills which comprises the country's second leading agro-industry after textiles. Sugar cane produces numerous valuable by products like, alcohol used by pharmaceutical industry, ethanol used as a fuel, Bagasse used for paper, synthetics, fiber, fuel, chip board manufacturing & as rich source of organic matter for crop production. This research effort will shape the future of farming community, through research and development, cooperation and creating awareness on the financial opportunities as well as modern farming techniques.
