« Donner carrière à l'imagination » : c'est par ces mots que le Neuchâtelois Aimé Humbert, signataire du premier Traité d'amitié et de commerce entre la Suisse et le Japon, termine l'introduction de l'ouvrage Le Japon illustré issu de son voyage. Publié en 1870 et riche de 476 gravures composées grâce aux matériaux iconographiques ramenés par le diplomate suisse, ce livre constitue une référence incontournable sur le passage de la période Edo à l'ère Meiji et un jalon majeur dans l'histoire de la perception du Japon par les Occidentaux.

A l'occasion du 150^e anniversaire de la signature du Traité, l'exposition Imagine Japan interroge ce captivant jeu d'images et explore la fascination persistante pour le Pays du Soleil Levant. Des anime et autres mangas à l'esthétique des jardins et des villes, en passant par les arts martiaux, les pratiques religieuses, le tatouage et les divertissements populaires, le Japon apparaît en effet comme un réservoir de pratiques et de représentations nourrissant de manière continue et féconde le vécu et l'imaginaire de nombreux Helvètes.

« Giving free rein to the imagination » are the closing words of the préfacé to Le Japon illustré, written by Neuchâtel diplomat Aimé Humbert, a signatory to the first Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Switzerland and Japan. Published in 1870, the travel journal features 476 pictures drawn from the many images that Humbert had collected during his Japanese mission. As well as its lavish illustrations, the book is an essential reference work on the transition of Japan from the Edo period to the Meiji era, and a major milestone in the West's understanding and perceptions of Japan. To celebrate the 150^th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty, the Imagine Japan exhibition explores these images and the enduring fascination with the Land of the Rising Sun. Whether it is anime or manga, garden or urban aesthetics, martial arts, religious practices, the art of tattooing or popular entertainment in général, Japan seems to serve as a repository of practices and representations that continue to nourish and stimulate both the imaginary and real experience of many Swiss.
