Ross Ferris, deceased highwayman, sometime hell-hound and soul reaper, escaped Hell and found sanctuary in a battlefield Church with fellow reaper, Caroline. When the Church is deconsecrated and the ancient battlefield becomes a building site, their freedom is threatened. Pursued by former colleagues, he flees to Fordyce House, hoping to remain undetected under the protection of neutral spirit, Lily.

However, too late he discovers the house is now under the control of his old adversary, Claude. Unable to resist the daemon, he is compelled to return to his old profession: harvesting the wraiths of the newly dead, but not for the usual purpose of sending them to the underworld, and not just those destined for Hell either!

So why is Claude snatching wraiths before Hell's hounds or Heaven's pearly poodles, can collect them?

When he discovers the daemon's true motives, Ross is left with no choice. With time against him and the ever-present threat of being returned to Hell, can he, with the help of the enigmatic Juliette, a motley crew of wraiths from both sides of death's divide, and his daemon friend, Caffiaes, thwart Claude's plans before it is too late. And can he prevent the outbreak of a war that will threaten not only the realms beyond death, but perhaps that of the living as well.
