The catalogue of the last exhibition of Günter Brus, who died shortly before its opening, presents a survey of the Vienna Actionists complete oeuvre, including the flamboyant watercolours of his last series of pictures.
Seven days before the opening of the exhibition at Kunsthaus Bregenz, on 10 February 2024, Günter Brus died in Graz, which makes this exhibition the last that he actively worked on. Special attention was paid to Brus's last series of pictures, created between 2020 and 2023 during the coronavirus lockdowns, which were exhibited at a public institution for the first time: flamboyant watercolours characterised by a playful inventiveness, depicting mysterious edifices, eerie monsters, and precarious ego states. Surreal scenes of loneliness, fear, death, and a dark dreaminess offer intimate insights into Brus's last creative phase.
