Le présent volume ambitionne de prendre en compte sur un temps long, depuis la naissance de la médecine occidentale de tradition hippocratique en Grèce au V^e siècle avant notre ère jusqu'aux dernières avancées des neurosciences, les principaux aspects culturels, philosophiques, psychologiques, sociaux et religieux susceptibles d'entrer en jeu dans le processus de guérison. Il s'inscrit donc à l'intersection de la médecine et de la philosophie, mais aussi de l'histoire des sciences, des idées et des religions. En s'intéressant aux différentes médecines dites « rationnelles » et « alternatives », il s'efforce notamment d'éclairer le processus cognitif à l'origine de la prise de décision par le médecin et le rôle de la raison et de la religion dans la réussite ou l'échec du traitement pour le patient.

The aim of this volume is to take into account the main cultural, philosophical, psychological, social and cultural aspects, which come into play in the healing process over a long period of time, from the beginning of western medicine of Hippocratic tradition in Greece during the 5^th century BC to the latest advances in neuroscience. Therefore this study lies at the intersection of medicine and philosophy, but also of history of science, ideas and religions. By focusing on the two fields of « rational » and « alternative » medicine, it attempts in particular to enlighten the physician's cognitive process at the origin of the decision-making and, from the patient's point of view, the role of reason and religion in the success or failure of the treatment.
