Published in 1945, Gulf of Penas brings together eighteen stories set in the Patagonian plains, where the protagonists--ship captains, whales, schooners, seal hunters, among others--confront the solitude and grandeur of remote lands. In doing so, they reveal the most primitive essence of the human being in their struggle for survival, while also uncovering a primordial beauty, kindness, and love for nature.
