The bulge extends out on either side of the two-dimensional plane of the spiral galaxy. Stars within this galaxy would have to travel over a million miles per hour to escape it. The spiral arms of this galaxy are made up of old stars. There are 150 such groups, or stellar clusters, around the Milky Way. These stars are among the oldest objects in the universe. One of the most famous discoveries about Galaxies was made by the American astronomer Vera Rubin. The Andromeda Galaxy's movement seemed to contradict Newton's Laws of Motion. Newton states that the stuff near the center of a galaxy should move faster than the stuff at the edges, but in reality, the material in the Andromeda Galaxy orbited at the same speed no matter where it was. The astronomer believes that this was due to non-visible mass that holds the galaxy together. This is called dark matter.
