Un homme trompe son père et usurpe une bénédiction qui revenait à son frère, une femme épouse le mari destiné à sa soeur, des frères vendent l'un d'entre eux à des marchands d'esclaves... Les récits bibliques sur les relations entre les enfants d'une même famille n'ont rien d'irénique : s'y expriment l'envie et la jalousie, la rivalité et la haine on tue, on vole et même on viole au sein de la fratrie ! C'est bien de notre humanité qu'il est question, et de la difficulté de la fraternité. Chacun à leur façon, les récits bibliques explorent les différentes manières dont se vivent et se transforment les relations entre les frères et soeurs. Il faut du temps, des rencontres, une progression personnelle pour que s'établisse ou se rétablisse la relation fraternelle. L'étude que mène l'auteur — en utilisant notamment les clés de lecture de la Bible fournies par l'analyse narrative — lui permet de mettre au jour les enjeux de la relation fraternelle : rien de moins que l'identité de chacun et la possibilité de vivre avec un autre, proche mais différent. Et l'on s'aperçoit que c'est la triple image d'une fraternité comme projet, d'une fraternité à construire, d'une fraternité en espérance, que donnent les récits bibliques.

A man tricks his father and steals the benediction intended for his brother, a woman marries her own sister's intended, brothers sell one of their siblings to a slave dealer... The biblical writings about relations between siblings are certainly not irenic: they express envy and jealousy, rivalry and hatred. Between brothers and sisters, there is murder, theft and even rape! This is truly humanity as we know it, with all the difficulty of fraternal relations. Each in its own manner, the Biblical narratives explore the different ways relations between brothers and sisters evolve. It takes time, meetings, personal progress to establish or regain a fraternal relationship. The author has made a study paying particular attention to the keys to Bible reading supplied by narrative analysis. The challenge of fraternal relationships is clearly exposed: it is no less than the identity of each one of us and the possibility to live with another human being, close, but other. And we observe that the Biblical narratives give a triple image: fraternity as a project, a fraternity to construct, a fraternity in hope.
