Desde el Grupo de Trabajo sobre Historia de la Ingeniería Mecánica y de las Máquinas y Mecanismos (HiM3) en el seno de la Asociación Española de Ingeniería Mecánica (AEIM), uno de los objetivos es llevar a cabo una serie de publicaciones, que contribuyan al conocimiento y reconocimiento de la historia de nuestra profesión. Este reto fue recogido con entusiasmo por la Universidad de Jaén, a través de su Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica y Minera y de su UJA Editorial. El primer fruto de esta idea es este libro que tenéis ante vosotros, primero de la serie, dedicado a algunas de las Figuras ilustres de la Ingeniería Mecánica en España. La obra del científico, a pesar de su incidencia en el desarrollo social, no tiene frecuentemente el reconocimiento que merece y es aún más patente en cuanto a la labor del mente ingeniero, que hace posible un continuo crecimiento del nivel de vida de la humanidad poniendo a su alcance las tecnologías y los medios materiales que cubran sus necesidades. Evidentemente, el hecho de que sean estos y no otros ingenieros en este primer volumen, no responde a ningún orden de importancia ni de olvido de tantos ingenieros cuyas aportaciones fueron fundamentales para el desarrollo de la ingeniería mecánica, que pretendemos ir recogiendo en futuras publicaciones. From the Working Group on the History of Mechanical Engineering and Machines and Mechanisms (HiM3), which belongs to the Spanish Association of Mechanical Engineering (AEIM), one of our aims is to conduct a series of publications which will contribute to the understanding and recognition of the history of our profession. The University of Jaén (UJA) eagerly took up this challenge through its Department of Mechanical and Mining Engineering and UJA Editorial. The first outcome of that idea is the book you have before you, the first in the series, dedicated to some of the Luminaries in Mechanical Engineering in Spain. The scientist?s work, despite its impact in the development of society, does not usually get the acknowledgement it deserves. This is even more evident regarding the work of engineers, who decisively contribute to the improvement of the constant growth of the standards of living of humanity by making the technologies and material resources that people need accessible for all. Clearly, the fact that this first volume features these engineers and not others has nothing to do with varying degrees of importance, or with the neglect of so many engineers whose contributions were paramount for the development of mechanical engineering. Indeed, we intend to feature those in future publications.
