Omschrijving

Esther Waters is a novel written by George Moore that was first published in 1894. The story follows the life of Esther Waters, a young woman who works as a kitchen maid in a wealthy household. After falling in love with a fellow servant, she becomes pregnant and is forced to leave her job. With no support from the father of her child, Esther is left to fend for herself and her baby. She moves to London and finds work as a wet nurse, but struggles to make ends meet. She eventually meets a man named William Latch, who offers to marry her and provide for her and her child. However, their marriage is not a happy one, and Esther soon discovers that William is an alcoholic and a gambler. Despite these challenges, Esther remains determined to provide a better life for herself and her child. The novel explores themes of poverty, class, and the struggles of women in Victorian society.""Perhaps you were right, Esther. I couldn't have kept you on, on account of the bad example to the younger servants. I might have helped you with money. But six months alone in London and in your condition! ... I am glad you did not tell me, Esther; and as you say there is another to think of now, I hope you will never neglect your child, if God give it to you alive.""This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
