« Le sujet d'un grand dessin ? (soupir) Un petit peu de tout : l'Ange au Sourire de Reims, puis, à côté, la tête de Wölfli, avec ses yeux entourés de noir, et même un autoportrait sur une montagne... mais ce n'est qu'un détail, après tu as tout un paysage, avec un chêne énorme - c'est un arbre que j'ai trouvé en Bretagne [...] et que j'ai dessiné pendant toute une matinée - et dans le feuillage de l'arbre tu vois apparaître une gravure rupestre que j'ai trouvée dans un livre allemand sur la Suède, et que j'ai fait tout un voyage pour retrouver... des choses comme ça... c'est difficile à expliquer. Tu sais : si je commence à expliquer mes oeuvres, je m'en détache. [...] Moi, je trouve que c'est formidable de pouvoir écouter le mystère. »

« The subject of a large drawing ? (sigh) A little bit of everything : the Smiling Angel of Rheims, then next to it, Wölfli's head, with its eyes ringed with black, and even a self-portrait on a mountain... but that is only a detail, after that you have a whole landscape, with a huge oak tree - it's a tree I found in Brittany [...] I spent a whole morning drawing it - and appearing in the tree's foliage you see a cave engraving that I found in a German book on Sweden, and which I made a whole trip to find... things like that... it's hard to explain. You know, if I start explaining my works, I become detached from them. [...] I personally find it is wonderful to be able to listen to the mystery. »
