Le 1^er avril 1822 la Société Asiatique, qui allait fédérer la recherche française sur le monde asiatique et la faire rayonner au-delà de nos frontières, tenait sa première séance. Deux cents ans plus tard, ce livre revient sur son histoire à travers les hommes qui l'animèrent et les personnalités scientifiques qui la dirigèrent, sur la constitution des riches collections de cette société savante, ainsi que sur ses relations avec les sociétés asiatiques anglaises et allemandes. Cet ouvrage insiste aussi sur la contribution de la Société Asiatique et de sa revue, le Journal Asiatique, à l'émergence de différents champs disciplinaires (linguistique historique, assyriologie, études sémitiques, indiennes et chinoises) et à la découverte scientifique des sociétés orientales. La Société Asiatique fut pendant longtemps le lieu où étaient exposés et publiés des documents inédits dont l'exploitation permit une évolution décisive de notre connaissance de l'Asie. Elle est encore aujourd'hui l'endroit privilégié où les savants viennent présenter leurs dernières découvertes. Comme le montrent les dernières contributions de cet ouvrage, la Société Asiatique est une association soucieuse de promouvoir la connaissance de l'Orient et de s'adapter aux évolutions récentes et aux nouveaux champs de la recherche scientifique.

On April 1st, 1822, the Société Asiatique destined to federate and promote French research on the Asian world, held its first meeting. Two hundred years later, this book looks back at its history through the men that steered it and the scientific minds that shaped it. It also considers the development of its rich collection, as well as the relationship built with English and German Asian societies. This book also emphasizes the role the Société Asiatique and its journal, the Journal Asiatique, played in bringing to light different subject areas (Historical linguistics, Assyriology, Semitic, Indian and Chinese studies) as well as scientific discoveries on oriental societies. Indeed, the Société Asiatique remained, for a long time, the locus for showing and publishing previously unknown documents, whose use allowed for a steep increase in our knowledge of Asia. It is still today a privileged place of learning, where scholars come to present their latest discoveries. The Société Asiatique is an organisation concerned with promoting knowledge of the Orient, adapting to recent developments and new fields of scientific research, as evidenced by the latest contributions to this book.
