Die Studie untersucht Voraussetzungen und Entwicklung dieses Prozesses bis zur Staatsschopfung des legendaren Imam Samil. Neben dem Abriss der Ereignisgeschichte stehen v.a. die Zusammensetzung von Anhangerschaft und Eliten des Widerstands sowie die Organisationsstrukturen des Imamatstaats und seine Ausgestaltung als Lebenswelt im Zentrum der Analyse.
