Entre les deux, les intrigues de " Crime et châtiment " et des " Frères Karamazov " nouent des meurtres, ainsi que les procès ou les châtiments qui y font suite, au commandement d'aimer assez pour ne pas juger autrui. L'espérance vient sans doute répondre à la question du meurtre et la question de l'adhésion au christianisme de Dostoïevski est si instante à l'intérieur de ces deux romans qu'elle en devient de façon souterraine le principe de structuration. Le romancier, trop averti qu'il était de la difficulté de faire entrer semblable message dans le langage du genre et, peut-être trop peu assuré qu'il en était, s'est autorisé du scandale, de la violence et du meurtre pour désigner la voie d'une réconciliation qui les déborderait. Ainsi se présente l'oscillation qui parcourt ces deux romans entre éthique et mystique d'une part, et connaissance du mal, de l'autre. D'où leur foisonnement. D'où leur unité. -- On the one hand, there is evil; on the other, love. Navigating between the two, the plots of 'Crime and Punishment' and 'The Brothers Karamazov' invent murders and the trials and punishments that follow in their wake, with the commandment to love enough not to judge others. Hope is the indubitable response to the question of murder, and the theme of Dostoyevsky's Christian belief is so insistent in both these novels that it becomes, in a way, their main substructure. The novelist, highly - perhaps exceedingly- aware of the difficulty involved in integrating such a message into a language of this genre, used scandal, violence and murder in order to indicate a path of reconciliation that would surpass them. This creates an oscillation that runs through the two novels, between the ethical and the mystical on one hand, and a knowledge of evil on the other. It is the source of their richness, and their unity.
