Après des études à l'école des beaux-arts de Saint-Étienne, Djamel Tatah s'engage totalement dans l'expérience picturale.
Dès la fin des années 1980, il opte pour de grands formats et des polyptyques aux fonds monochromes sur lesquels apparaissent des figures humaines à taille réelle.

Grâce aux prêts d'oeuvres majeures issues du célèbre cabinet de dessins de l'École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris (Poussin, Géricault, Delacroix, Carpeaux...), de la Donation Yvon Lambert à l'État français (Robert Mangold, Brice Marden, Robert Ryman, Robert Barry, Richard Serra...) et de sa collection personnelle (Ariane endormie, dessins d'Henri Matisse...), c'est un dialogue unique auquel est convié le lecteur, où toutes ces oeuvres font écho au monde d'aujourd'hui et aux tragédies de notre histoire sur l'autre rive de la Méditerranée. Elles évoquent les réfugiés de Syrie, les migrants de Libye ou de Somalie, et les destructions du marché d'Alep ou des temples gréco-romains de Palmyre.

Following his graduation from the École des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Étienne, Djamel Tatah became completely committed to painting. Since the end of the 1980s he has opted for large formats and polyptychs with life-sized human figures on monochrome grounds.

Thanks to loans of major works from the renowned drawings department of the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris (including works by Poussin, Géricault, Delacroix and Carpeaux), from the Donation Yvon Lambert to the French State (Robert Mangold, Brice Marden, Robert Ryman, Robert Barry, Richard Serra and more), as well as from Lambert's own collection (Ariane endormie and drawings by Henri Matisse, for example), the reader is invited into a unique dialogue, echoing today's world and the tragedies of our history. They evoke Syrian refugees, Libyan and Somali migrants, and the destruction of the Aleppo market as well as that of Greco-Roman temples in Palmyra.
