La rencontre de ceux qui sont situés à la dernière place dans notre société est un lieu privilégié pour découvrir ce qui constitue l'humanité de l'homme. Car il s'agit bien d'assumer l'altérité radicale du petit, ou du pauvre, en même temps que le fait qu'il est semblable à nous et, plus précisément, que nous lui sommes semblables. Si nous n'éprouvons pas ce sentiment de précarité qu'il nous révèle, notre rencontre avec lui deviendra vite condescendance. Cette expérience nous renvoie également aux nombreux passages bibliques où nous constatons que Dieu lui-même choisit le dernier. Le fait se reproduit trop souvent dans la Bible pour qu'il ne soit pas porteur d'une signification essentielle à la foi. Le choix du dernier apparaît en Jésus comme un lieu majeur de la révélation du visage de Dieu. Un tel Dieu ne peut être accueilli s'il ne l'est dans le dernier.

When we meet those who find themselves on the lowest rungs of our society, we are in a privileged situation for discovering what constitutes man's humanity. It is truly a question of assuming the radical otherness of the lowly or impoverished, as well the fact that they are so like us and, more precisely, that we are so like them. If we cannot experience the feeling of precariousness they reveal to us, our encounter with them quickly sinks into condescension. Equally, this experience refers us to numerous passages in the Bible where we observe that God Himself chooses the last rather than the first. This pattern recurs too often in the Bible for it not to be the bearer of fundamental significance to our Faith. The choice of the last appears in Jesus as a major lieu of the revelation of God's face. Such a God cannot be welcomed if He is not welcomed in the form of the most lowly.
