This book is about a wonderful city where I grew up and had come to love dearly. Much within the early chapters deals with everyday life in times long gone by. Old timers may find the little details will rekindle old memories and recall the ways thing had been in those early years. Life was much simpler then and the family was so central in our lives. Detroit was vibrant in so many ways. We cherished our distinctive neighborhoods, the excitement of city life and the many cultural activities available. Hopefully the many added photographs might help the readers transport themselves into this interesting story of life in Detroit from the Great Depression of the 1930s to the present. So much has changed in Detroit over the years. No doubt many will be saddened as the narrative switches to the decline of that once great city resulting from poor political leadership, the decline in industry, a terrifying increase in crime, an exodus of the middle class and the abandonment of neighborhoods. The mood changes in the closing chapter with the hope that the many noble efforts now being expended can meet the challenges and reverse the trend. Hopefully Detroit will overcome despair and strive to once again becoming a great city worth emulating.
