Der Zigeunerbaron, better known in the English-speaking world as The Gypsy Baron, was somewhat of a departure the light-hearted nature of Johann Strauss' previous nine operettas. The basic scenario takes place in Hungary and involves the return of an exiled nobleman who marries a Gypsy girl who turns out to be the daughter of the Turkish pasha and owner of a great hidden treasure.
The operetta was given its premiere on October 24, 1885 in Vienna's Theater an der Wien under the composer's direction. It was a great interntional success, with the United States premiere given in New York a few months later. The vocal score offered here is a carefully restored reprint of the one issued in the fall of 1901 for a much-acclaimed revival at the Theater an der Wien. Enlarged to a very easy-to-read A4 format, this vocal score be much appreciated by vocalists, chorus members and pianists alike.
