Voir, voir les couleurs, en distinguer les moments significatifs en provoquant la perception et la sensation, au point de susciter une émotion, laquelle est déjà sujette à interprétation, là est sans doute une part essentielle du travail que propose Daniel Walravens. Tout son parcours retrace l'expérience du voir par une exploration fine et étendue de la couleur.

«L'approche que je puis donner de mon travail est en quelque sorte le reflet de propositions résultant de mes recherches. Ces propositions visuelles s'articulent essentiellement autour de la couleur qui, depuis 1965, est le fil conducteur de mon activité. Mes motivations m'ont conduit, d'une part, à un travail de peinture - prise en compte du geste, de l'expression, suivi d'un affinement vers le «minimal» -, d'autre part, à des travaux pluridimensionnels de décorateur, de coloriste, de recherche et d'élaboration de méthodes appartenant à des disciplines scientifiques. Mon travail actuel est à comprendre comme un renvoi permanent entre ces différentes activités et a pour effet d'annuler, au profit des interactions possibles, les oppositions traditionnellement en vigueur dans le domaine artistique: peinture/décor, artiste/artisan, art/industrie...» (Daniel Walravens, «Proposition possible d'une approche de mes travaux», janvier 1981)

Seeing, seeing colours, distinguishing their significant moments by provoking perception and sensation, in order to arouse emotion, which itself is already open to interpretation-this is no doubt the essential thrust of the work proposed by Daniel Walravens. Everything he has done is about working through the experience of seeing in a what is subtle and extensive exploration of the phenomenon we call colour.

«The approach to my work which I suggest here is in some sense a reflection of the proposals arising from my research. These visual proposals are essentially articulated around the theme of colour which, since 1965, has been the guiding concern of my work. My motivations have led me to work both as a painter-taking into account gesture and expression before moving towards a more purified kind of «minimalism», and to multidimensional work as a decorator and colour designer, researching and formulating methods that belong more to scientific disciplines. My current activity should be understood as a series of constant cross-references between these various activities, ultimately cancelling to the benefit of their possible interactions the traditional oppositions applied to art: artistic/decorative painting, artist/craftsman, art/industry.» (Daniel Walravens, «Proposal for a possible approach to my work,» January 1981)
